Tropical Kauai Farmers Markets

There is nothing quite like the Kauai farmers markets. The islands have a whole lot of amazing things growing year-round. I love stocking up on a large bounty of tropically grown goodies as soon as I land. If you are able to book a condo with a kitchen that is the best way to fully submerge yourself in the Hawaiian way of living. That way you can become closer to the magical community that lives on the islands.

Where To Find The Freshest Produce On Kauai

On this blog post, I am sharing where to find some of the best Kauai farmers markets that I visited during my stay. Plus what to buy and cook while you are there for a nutrient-rich, and authentic island cuisine. There is so much to offer it is hard not to go overboard and buy a little bit of everything. It really is to bad we can’t load our suitcases full of freshly grown fruits and vegetables from the islands. But sadly the agricultural security will happily take it all if you try to get through the airport.

The first farmers market we visited was the Kauai Community Market held at the community college in Lihue. On Saturdays from 9:30am1pm. It was a large market full of farm stands, food trucks, food vendors, bakers, artisans, and plant shops. We happened to visit during the big garden fair. There were tons of plants I wish I could have brought home with me too.

What Is In Season At The Kauai Farmers Market

Although there was plenty of fruit and vegetables to go around. There were a lot of my favorites that were missing from the tables during this trip. This time of year (beginning of April) is offseason for a lot of fruit. Like Mangos, starfruit, dragonfruit, lychee, lilikoi, and other rare fruit that I have previously found on the islands in the summertime. Mangoes are always my favorite food to eat while visiting Hawaii, so I was extremely disappointed to miss them! But there were still a ton of papayas, pineapples, and all different kinds of citrus. We also found some of my other favorite things like cucumber, turmeric, apple bananas, shallots, lemon, cilantro, purple sweet potatoes, tomatoes, green beans, beets, carrots, hibiscus, limes, tangerines, grapefruit, and large avocados.

What I Made With My Kauai Farmers Market Haul

I like to make a smoothie in the morning for breakfast. It is nice to mix up a little bit of something different for a change. I added papaya, apple banana, carrot, beet, cucumber, turmeric, lime, hibiscus, and a mixture of fresh greens. Every morning when I was there and felt instantly energized and nourished for all my adventures. And a few times we had to make our favorite banana mac nut pancakes with coconut syrup. With a side of fresh purple sweet potatoes. For lunch, I liked packing a sandwich with freshly made super green hummus, avocado, cucumber, onion, greens, and tomatoes. We also used a couple of the giant avocados to make guacamole a couple of times. The best dang guacamole I have ever had. For dinner, we did not cook a meal every night because we still wanted to try a few restaurants. But we did grill some fresh-caught ono for fish tacos. Then made an island fresh pineapple salsa to go on top. My favorite meal we had during our trip.

Farmers Market Attire

Of course, when visiting a tropical farmers market I had to pull out my favorite white linen skirt. I bought it online at a vintage shop called Improv Goods. You can see me wearing it in this post and this post too. I recently bought this pistachio colored linen crop top. It has a cute tie in the back that can be worn in the front as well. The top is from one of my favorite ethically-made linen clothing shops called Posse. I also own an amazing jumpsuit and off the shoulder white top from them. Which you can see in this post and this post. They always have so many amazingly cute pieces. If you check them out I am sure you can find something that you will love to add to your closet. I know I wish that I could add every piece of their collection whenever I am scrolling on their website. I also packed my new market basket bag that I bought from Connected Goods. It is the perfect purse and farmers market basket combo. Also, my new favorite bag that I will be wearing all spring and summer long.

The Hanalei Farmers Market

Since we were staying in Princeville for most of the trip I had to visit the Hanalei Farmers Market. Even though it was on Saturday the day before we left. There were a lot more variety and a lot more fruit than the other farmers market. So I decided to try a couple of unique fruits that were ripe enough to eat. Sadly I had to leave a few behind. The farmers said they would have to take a week to ripen. But I was able to find fresh strawberry guava. One of my favorite tropical fruits but this was the first time I tried this variety fresh from the tree. Then I also found a lady selling fresh guava juice which I quickly bought to sip on at the beach. Then I also tried an egg fruit. The locals said it tasted like sweet potato pie and vanilla so I knew I had to try it. It also has a texture of a hard boiled egg.

The Kauai Farmers Market Map

I highly recommend both of these markets if you are visiting Kauai. But if you miss them there are plenty of farmers’ markets everyday spread out all over the island. And tons of farms you can tour as well. Use this map to guide you to the closest one on the day that works best for you and make sure to verify the information because some of them have moved because of the recent flooding on the north shore. I don’t want you to miss out on this experience when visiting one of my favorite places on earth. I hope you have a marvelous trip and thank you for reading my blog post!
